Sleep well, even on the couchLove can be a tough game.  Couples disagree, they argue and sometimes they fight.  It’s perfectly natural, though sometimes a fight with your spouse can lead to some undesirable consequences.

Husbands of the world, you’ve all probably been exiled to the downstairs sofa at some point, and that’s ok.  Sometimes it’s impossible to avoid a speed-bump in your relationship.  But at the very least, try to prepare yourself for next time with a sofa that’s comfortable enough to let you enjoy a decent night’s sleep.

Why Do Fools Fall in Love? Finding The Right Sofa For The Right Space

Keep your head and take measurements before heading into the store

Plenty of people fall in love with the perfect sofa in the furniture store, but bring them home to find it doesn’t fit the desired space.  How can you avoid choosing a bad match?

Be mindful of your space and the measurements.  Try bringing a photograph of the space with you to the store.  Use it to estimate how well a sofa might fit in your room in terms of decor.

Measure the dimensions of your room.  Be sure to ask a salesman for the dimensions (height, length, and width) of any piece that catches your eye.  Or if you’re browsing contemposofa.com, just have a look at any of our product pages for the dimensions of a specific piece.

Write down the dimensions, and when you go home, create an outline of the sofa with masking tape to get an idea of how much space might be required.  Try this in any potential spots you may want to place the sofa to be sure it will fit properly.

The Power of The Pillow Fort

Here at Contempo Sofa, we strive to craft luxurious, modern sofas..  But you know who doesn’t care about luxury or custom design?  Kids.

Kids just want to have fun (can you blame them?).  Our salesmen could prattle on all day about 100% Italian leather upholstery, no sag coil-springs, wide cushions, and Velcro fasteners, but those kids would probably just let the words fly over their little heads (not difficult) and start jumping all over our fine sofa products (not difficult either, those cushions are pretty comfy).

So today at Contempo Sofa, we’re going to take a look at one of our favorite childhood sofa uses – the pillow fort.  A symbol of creativity, adventure and fun, even for adults it’s a heartwarming adventure into DIY living room architecture.  These are some of the best on the web:

It’s winter in America.  The air is cold, the sky is gray and the charm of the Christmas season has long passed.  But it’s not all bad.  After all, winter means snow!

As the people of Colorado are now well aware, snow can be a real pain in the neck on a work day – cleaning off the car, shoveling the sidewalk, finding a list minute babysitter when school cancels.

But there are a few upsides.  The fresh smell in the air, snowmen gathering on the lawn and snowball fights crowding the streets – there’s some magic left to the winter season.

Next time it snows, don’t go out.  Call in sick, leave the car in the driveway and make yourself a cup of hot cocoa.  Curl up on one of our comfy Contempo Sofas and lose yourself staring out the window, as the snow falls and the children play.

We only get a limited number of snow days, so make them count.

Cleaning Tips for Leather Upholstery

Accidents happen and, even worse, sometimes they happen to leather.  Next time you have a little spill on the sofa, don’t panic.  Just keep these Contempo Sofa tips in mind:

To remove small ink stains, dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and apply gently.  Take great care to be delicate and avoid applying the alcohol to unstained areas.  Dry gently, as well.

Oil and grease can be removed with baby powder.  First wipe as much of whatever substance off the leather as possible.  Then cover the stain in baby powder and let it sit overnight.   Wipe away in the morning.

Dark stains can be removed from light-colored upholstery by mixing a paste of lemon juice and cream of tartar.  Apply the paste to the stain and let it sit for about ten minutes.  Apply another layer the paste, rub it in gently, and then remove with a damp sponge.  If you’d like you could also add a little moisturizing soap to your sponge.

Moisturizing soap is generally an effective way to freshen up your leather and keep it well-conditioned.  Just remember not to soak the leather or rinse.  Just dab it with a moist cloth.  You can also purchase soap made specifically to treat leather products.

Timeliness and preparation are both important.  If you can treat the stain immediately, that will prevent it from saturating the leather and becoming permanent.

Do not ever use hand sanitizer, dish soap, Windex or nail polish remover to clean leather upholstery.  The chemicals in these substances could damage the leather further leaving ugly spots and blotches.  Also, before trying your cleaning methods, find an inconspicuous or unused spot on your sofa to test the cleaning solution first, just to be sure your solution won’t damage or stain the upholstery even further.

Naps: The Key To A Better Life

Go, Go, Go.  Work, Work, Work.  Sound familiar?

Americans are overworked, underpaid, and, sadly, not changing any time soon.  But there is a way to keep up productivity throughout a long day without sacrificing your health (and cash!) to caffeine and energy drinks: NAPS!

Believe it or not, napping is widely praised for its cognitive and physical benefits.  According to Webmd, as little as 20 minutes of peaceful snoozing can vastly improve alertness.  30 minutes in and you’ve got improved decision making skills.  60 minutes of napping completely refreshes the brain, preparing a busy mind for creative problem solving.

Save money, feel better, work harder.  Take a nap.
