Hip Arthritis Might Not Need Surgery

Hip Arthritis doesn't need to be countered with invasive treatment!According to The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, hip arthritis, if caught in early stages, may not require surgery or any other invasive treatment.  It might not even require medication.

According to tips from HealthDay News, early stage Hip Arthritis can be treated with simple exercise routines.  Biking, Swimming or water aerobics help to improve “joint strength, function, and range of motion.”

But, it’s not all about exercise.  Their advice also states that plenty of sleep each night and giving your hip “time to rest” will also help ameliorate the effects of hip arthritis.  We recommend a Contempo Sofa to give your hip Grade-A relaxation and your living room a gorgeous new amenity.

The Simpsons and The Most Famous Sofa On TV

This Sunday, The Simpsons, also known as the greatest animated TV show ever to grace the small screen, will air its 500th episode.  The Simpsons have been on TV since 1987, when they debuted as shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show.  Since then the show has become an American icon with its own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

And for every single episode, there is always a new opening scene featuring the iconic couch gag.  Wrap your head around that.  The writers of the Simpsons have found 500 different ways for the Simpsons to gather on the couch (well no not exactly, they actually reuse each gag at least twice, but that’s still pretty impressive).  And each time it’s hilarious.

Check out the video below for some classic couch gags.

Links Between Stress and Heart Attack Begin To Blur

Although we often associate stress with heart attacks, the link might be blurring. We spend a lot of time on this blog talking about the negative effects of stress and the importance of relaxation, but some new research shows that the link between stress and heart attack is becoming blurrier.  While scientists say it’s clear that increased stress leads to a greater risk of heart disease, according to Florida Today, scientists still can’t say for sure that reducing stress will reduce heart attacks in those without a pre-existing heart condition.

People under stress are more likely to smoke, eat poorly and skip exercise, all factors that contribute to heart disease.  So while stress has long had a bad relationship with the heart, it might be external factors, not just stress, that cause heart problems.

Nonetheless, stress still sucks, and we don’t need a PHD to prove it.  Go for a long walk and then chill out on the sofa every now and then to reduce your stress and future risk of health problems.

Step Away From the Couch for 40 Days and 40 Nights

Gathering around the TV is nice but why not go play a game of football instead? As Catholics enter the Lenten season, one concept seems to enter the public mind: sacrifice.  The question is always “what are you giving up for 40 days and 40 nights?”  Never “what are you taking on for the rest of your life?”

Not to say giving up bad habits is objectionable, but why do we only see sacrifice as a means to self-improvement?  There is far more to be gained by picking up healthy habits instead of simply halting bad habits.

This year, many people will probably give up some form of junk food for Lent.  But why not create a real resolution to exercise more instead.  Walk up the stairs instead of taking the elevator.  Do ten push-ups before dinner.  Stretch before bed each night.

Obesity is a growing problem in America, and although we often aim to fight it with dietary techniques, a little exercise can go just as far.  Stop being a couch potato and use your body for its genuine purpose (though by all means please feel free to spend a little time on your Contempo Sofa).

This year, don’t just ask yourself how sacrificing will make you a healthier person.  Become a healthier person by doing something.

The Origin of the Word “Sofa”

The sofa has a long rich history across Europe and the Middle EastAlright class, sit down, and straighten up.  It’s time for your first history lesson.

Today, we’re going to learn the etymology of the word “sofa.”

But first, a fun fact: the word “sofa” exists in several European languages, including English, French, Danish, Icelandic, and Norwegian.  The term is also found in an African language known as Mandinka, used in Mali, Senegal, The Gambia, Burkina Faso and more.  In Mandinka, the term “sofa” actually refers to slave soldiers used by the Mali Empire.  The English translation of the Madinka term is “father of the horse.”

The English word, however, comes from the Middle East.  “Sofa,” it is believed, originally comes from the Turkish language.  The term refers to a “raised section of floor, covered with carpets and cushions.”

But the etymology doesn’t stop there.  The Turkish term “sofa” is likely derived from the Arabic term صفة or súffa which refers to a long seat made from stone or brick, more popularly known today as a “bench.”

Experts believe that the word likely entered European usage via either the Moorish occupation of Spain or the expansive trade routes of the Ottoman Empire.

Bonus round: the term “couch” comes from the old French couche meaning bed.

Sleep Cycle Wakes You During Your Lightest Sleep Phase

Tired of that annoying alarm clock yet?Does the morning person really exist?  We think it’s a myth, but with Sleep Cycle, a new app for the iPhone, mornings might not be so rough any more.  Designed by Macjek Drejak, the Sleep Cycle app wakes you when you are at your lightest sleep phase so waking up is a much less-intrusive event.

When you sleep, your body goes through a wide variety of sleep “phases” ranging from light sleep to deep sleep.  During deep sleep, your body will also enter REM-sleep, which is when you start dreaming.  When your alarm clock goes off during deep sleep or REM-sleep, you wake up feeling like you just got hit by a bus.  However awakening from a light sleep-phase is a fairly painless process.

The Sleep Cycle app uses the iPhone’s accelerometer to detect the amount of movement you make while sleeping.  Based upon how much you’re moving, the app can detect which sleep phase you’re in.  Then it sets a 30-minute window ending at your designated alarm time to wake you up whenever you enter a light sleep phase.

Says the developer, Macjek Drejak:

“This isn’t really something new. These so called bio-alarm clocks have been around for years and work very well, but they usually come with a hefty $200 price tag. I realized that the iPhone has all the components needed, and decided to make an alarm clock that works exactly the same, but sell it for a dollar or two instead.”

For more information visit http://www.sleepcycle.com

Although this sounds like a dream, we still challenge you to get up after a nap on a Contempo Sofa.  You might be awake, but, trust us; you won’t want to get up.

Children Beginning to Outgrow Traditional Chairs and Desks

American children are outgrowing chairs, desks, clothes, even growth charts!America has a fascination with big.  We like big TV’s, we like big cars, and we like big meals.  But some experts are saying that our obsession with big is starting to get out of hand with growing obesity rates in both children and adults.

Clothing sizes have progressively been getting bigger, as have chairs and desks made primarily for school children.  According to a story published by CNN, some schools are even beginning to provide separate chairs and desks for students who have grown too large to fit in traditional-sized furnishings.

Currently, one in every three children is obese or overweight.  Traditional growth charts don’t even apply to today’s youth.  While some critics argue that Americans are just getting larger, and the growth charts need to be revised to fit a new standard, others argue that the growing number of children “exceeding what would’ve been the top percentile for weight and BMI” for earlier standards “highlights the problem we have.”

Nonetheless, the increasing size of the average American is a “trend reflected in the furniture,” says Tom Brennan, president of School Outfitters, a company selling school furniture.  “When you look at an import product from China, you can tell the difference…The buckets are generally not wide enough.  They have to be designed specifically for the U.S.”

It should be noted that over the past five years, plus-sized desks and chairs have outsold the standard sizes.

What do you think?  Is obesity really a growing epidemic or are people just getting bigger?  Is this a sign that America’s weight problem is getting out of hand or just the next step in our biological growth?  Should schools be buying larger furniture or focusing their efforts towards obesity prevention and treatment?

Bellange: A Magnificent Display of Craftsmanship in the White House

Two gorgeous Bellange chairsThe Bellange furniture suite is one of the oldest and most important pieces of furniture in the White House presidential collection.  Ordered by President Monroe, the 53 piece set included two sofas and twenty arm-chairs made by Parisian cabinet maker Pierre Antoine Bellange.

The gorgeous upholstery was ordered to refurnish the White House after the fire of 1814, when British troops set the presidential mansion ablaze.

For several years, it graced the elliptical room of the White House, which has since been refurnished and renamed “The Blue Room.”

The magnificent Bellange sofa and chairsSadly, several pieces from the set were sold off over the years to make room for new furniture, but several chairs and other pieces were reacquired by the Kennedys during Jackie’s crusade to restore the White House at the beginning of JFK’s first term.  More pieces were eventually recovered during the administrations of Nixon, Reagan, and Clinton.

While, unfortunately, we can’t claim any of our furniture is in the White House (if you happen to know the Obamas’ interior decorator be sure to give him/her our number), we can guarantee that our luxury sofas are elegant, comfortable and all-around luxurious pieces perfect for furnishing anyone’s room.  Like the Bellange pieces, they’ll last for generations to come.  Maybe they’ll even see the day when your descendants are running for President.
